Medical Coordination Protocols in Ultrarunning
As ultrarunning continues to grow in popularity and push the boundaries of human endurance, ensuring the safety and well-being of athletes becomes paramount. The International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) recognizes this critical need and has been working diligently to establish comprehensive medical coordination protocols for ultrarunning events worldwide.
Standardized Care
These protocols, developed in collaboration with leading sports medicine experts, race organizers, and medical professionals, aim to standardize medical care, improve emergency response, and enhance athlete safety across all IAU-sanctioned competitions.
Proactive Risk Management
A key aspect of these protocols is the emphasis on proactive risk assessment and management. By identifying potential health risks before and during events, medical teams can intervene swiftly and effectively, minimizing adverse outcomes.
Athlete Education
The guidelines also stress the importance of athlete education, encouraging runners to understand their own physical limits, recognize early warning signs, and make informed decisions about their participation.
Dr. Beatrice Constandache was present as a speaker at the 13th EFSMA Congress of Sports Medicine, held from September 25–27, 2025, in Bucharest, Romania.
Dr. Constandache as a member of the Medical Committee of the International Association of Ultrarunners , delivered an insightful oral presentation titled “Mastering the Ultramarathon Challenge,” highlighting cutting-edge approaches to endurance performance, recovery optimization, and innovation in sports medicine.
IAU provides a framework for race directors to implement best practices, including pre-race medical screenings, on-course medical support, post-race recovery strategies, and guidelines for managing common ultrarunning-related injuries and conditions. The IAU’s commitment to these medical protocols underscores its dedication to fostering a safe and responsible environment for ultrarunners to thrive. By continuously refining and implementing these standards, the IAU aims to set a global benchmark for athlete safety in endurance sports, ensuring that the spirit of ultrarunning can be enjoyed responsibly for years to come. These protocols are an evolving document and will be updated as new evidence and best practices emerge in sports medicine.
